Walking group raises over £1700 for rescuers
A rescued walker and her friends have just given over £1700 to Patterdale MRT as a thank you for their work.
Earlier in the summer (4 July), a member of a walking group from Rosley near Wigton had a fall whilst in Grisedale, Patterdale. The walker, Anne Carruthers, received a head injury and her walking party alerted the police who called out Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team.
Several team members attended and Anne received first aid and was then stretchered across Grisedale Beck to an air ambulance helicopter. She was taken to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle where she made a full recovery.
As a result of Anne’s rescue, members of the Rosley walking group and other villagers decided to raise funds for Patterdale Mountain Rescue. Over two weekends in September, six of them (Jeanne Albutt, Lynn Beattie, Janet Bell, Deborah Bowman, Donna Stephenson and Anne herself) walked the entire length of the Hadrian’s Wall Path – some 84 miles - and raised £1,170 in sponsorship.
Not content with this, Jean Simpson, Sheila Moffat and Linda Low of Rosley went on to organise a coffee morning at Rosley Village Hall in October, which raised a further £543, bringing the total to £1,713.
“And that’s still growing with additional donations and support,” says Anne. “I think local people already appreciate the work our mountain rescue teams do but knowing someone who’s needed their help brings it all closer to home. The Patterdale Team were amazingly professional when I needed their help and it’s good to be able to say Thank you in a practical way. And thanks also to all the friends who have helped with our fundraising.”
Alistair McCaig and Simon Woodrow of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team (with Simon’s trainee search dog Molly) went along to the coffee morning to receive the impressive donation and also to show the walking group and other’s from the village the Team’s Land Rover and rescue equipment, demonstrating where the hard earned money would be spent.
