Local rescuers fight it out at Fun Day
Local mountain rescuers and fire fighters competed for honours at Saturday’s Fun Day (24 September) to launch this year’s Ullswater Outdoor Festival.
“We’ve got to know the local retained fire fighters well in recent months as they’ve been keeping their tender vehicle at our Base while their new HQ in the valley is under construction,” said Glenn Bridge of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT). “We wanted to contribute to the Fun Day and Festival and a couple of It’s a Knockout –style races between the two groups seemed like a good idea for a bit of fun.”
A large crowd cheered on the two teams in the best of three challenges: a Stretcher Race using the typical mountain rescue Bell stretcher, a Fire Hose Race and a Pulling-the-MRT-Land-Rover Race.
As predicted, Patterdale MRT won the Stretcher Race and the Fire Service won the Fire Hose Race so the contest was decided with a closely-fought Land Rover Pull, best of three.
“Patterdale MRT edged a very close final event with a win in the deciding leg of the Land Rover Pull,” said Glenn, “but it was great fun and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. A big thank you goes to everyone who took part and made it such a great success.”
