Patterdale Mountain Rescue incidents for 2006

01 Search	22/01/0 15.30	Ruthwaite Cove	Woman concerned for safety of the owner of a rucksack apparently abandoned in Ruthwaite Cove. Search did not reveal any sign of the rucksack or owner.
02 Search	30/01/06 17.15	St. Sunday Crag Grisedale	Man became separated form his companion whilst climbing Pinnacle Ridge on St. Sunday Crag. The man was suffering from ME and was located in Grisedale, exhausted and cold.
03 Search	08.01.05 13.20	Boredale	Two persons called the Police from a mobile to report they were lost in hill fog. They had started to descend into Boredale in the next valley. Team located and took them back to Hartsop.
04 Rescue	22/02/06 16.43	Red Tarn Area Helvellyn	A Man slipped on ice causing a fracture dislocation of his ankle. The man was treated on the fell and stretchered down to Greenside and transferred to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle. The Buxton team were training in the area and assisted with the rescue.
05 Rescue	21/02/06 16.05	Helvellyn	Two persons became frightened in white out snow storm on summit of Helvellyn. Team were making progress towards them when the weather cleared. The persons telephoned police to say they no longer required assistance.
06 Rescue	24/02/06 16.10	Ullswater	22 ft boat capsized on Ullswater in a squall. Adult and two children trapped. Team Boat with Howtown Outdoor Centre Boat. Brought Casualties to Land. With Howtown boat the team RIB towed the tri-hulled boat to shore.
07 Search	07/03/06 13.40	Helvellyn	Two males from Cockermouth climbed Swirral Edge in snowy conditions. Companion was found to be missing on summit. Saw footprints going over edge onto steep face of Helvellyn. Man had walked over edge and later called family to say that he was unhurt and made his own way off.
08 Rescue	11/13/06 15.20	Raise/Sticks Pass	Male aged 39 tripped over his crampons and fractured his leg. Team treated him and he was flown to Cumberland Infirmary by a helicopter from RAF Leconfield
09 Police Assistance	12/03/06 11.00	A66 / M6	Request from police to help transport police officers in our 4 wheel drive vehicles. Patrols of the A66 and M6 in bad snow and ice conditions.
10 Rescue	17/03/06 16.37	Kirkstone Pass	Female slipped above the Kirkstone Pass sustaining a fractured femur. A member of the team assisted Langdale Ambleside MRT in the evacuation.
11 Rescue	18/03/06 12.53	Swirral Edge Helvellyn	A 45 yr. old male fell from Swirral Edge Helvellyn some 150ft towards Red Tarn. Head, back and leg injuries. Flown to Cumberland Infirmary Carlilse. Members of RAF Leeming MRT who were on exercise in the area also accepted.
12 Search	23/03/06 0800	North Pennines Merton Fell area	Assisted Kirkby Stephen and Penrith Teams in search for local resident who had not returned from a walk in the Merton Fell area of the North Pennines. An RAF helicopter, with heat seeking equipment, also conducted an extensive search. Missing person not located so Teams stood down. An RAF Seaking helicopter, search dogs, Mountain Rescue Teams from RAF Leeming, Kendal, Keswick, Kirkby Stephen, Moffat, Patterdale and Teesdale and the local Police cooperated in the search of an extended area. The missing person was not located and all civilian teams were stood downtime Patterdale search dogs with other SARDA members also searched the previous night.
13 Rescue	24/03/06 14.21	Swirral Edge Helvellyn	A 4 man and his wife from Hinkley, Leistershire became cragfast in winter conditions on Swirral Edge and were unable to continue. They dialled 999 for assistance. A team member was quickly with them and helped them to safe ground. Some Team members also stood by with technical equipment should it be required.
14 Search	25/03/06 0800	North Pennines Merton Fell area	The search for the missing man from Merton (Incident 12 above) was resumed with no success.
15 Rescue	01/04/06	Helvellyn	A call was received from the police for a male from Liverpool who had become cragfast high on the cliffs above Red Tarn. An RAF helicopter was called from refueling at Carlisle. The difficult weather conditions on scene made it too dangerous to winch the man from the ledge so team members descended by rope from the summit of Helvellyn and lowered him to safe ground.
16 Rescue	06/04/06	Dove Crag Area	A 15yr old Explorer Scout became mildly hypothermic on a practice Duke of Edinburgh expedition. The group followed their safety training and erected a tent and summoned help. The female was flown back to the Patterdale Rescue Centre and the rest of the group were escorted down. The Great North Air Ambulance assisted with transport.
17 Rescue	15/04/06 12.35	Ullswater	A call from police to launch the rescue RIB for 2 persons in Ullswater Lake and a capsized boat. Ullswater Outward Bound, The Howtown Outdoor Centre, Ullswater Yacht ClubThe Coast Guard, Air Ambulance, RAF Seaking Helicopter, Police and a land Ambulance all attended. The persons were brought ashore by a private boat from Waterfoot.
18 Search	15/04/06 18.30	Red Screes Kirkstone	A 12 yr old boy had become separated from his family. The family searched for an hour before calling the emergency services. The boy was located as the search was being initiated. The boy suffered minor face injuries from a tumble.
19 Search	22/04/06 17.00	Bad Step Striding Edge	2 males became separated on Striding Edge having taken different routes. Their intention was to meet up at Helvellyn summit.One became disorientated and descended to Grasmere.
20 Search	22/04/06 18.15	Helvellyn	A 44 yr. old female and a 17 yr. old male became disorientated in mist. Reported as overdue by Family member. Shortly after search was started they arrived safely at their car.
21 Public Assistance	23/04/06 14.45	Loadpot Hill	Military shell found on fell. Site marked and guarded by Team. Transported MOD Ordinance Disposal unit to safely remove.
22 Lake Incident	29/04/06 14.00	Ullswater	Father and 2 children capsized canoe. Recovered by Lake Steamer and brought to pier. Medical treatment by the Team who met the incoming boat. Mild Hypothermia.
23 Rescue	29/04/06 14.45	Melguards Howtown	A 57 yr. old male fell on rough scree. Treated on scene and stretchered to waiting Landrover Ambulance. Injuries to head and hand. Transfered to County Ambulance
24 Search	29/04/06 17.12	Swarth Fell	Parapenter reported to be high up on fell unable to move. Investigated and found that pilot was waiting for wind to lift off.
25 Search	17/05/06 19.10	Thornthwaite Beacon	Two experienced female walkers from Cockermouth reported overdue from walk. Companion waiting at Patterdale. Search initiated and subjects located safe and well having become disorientated in low cloud around Thornthwaite Beacon area.
26 Search	21/05/06 15.08	Thornthwaite Beacon	70yr old male became disorientated in Thornthwaite area whilst walking from Askham to Troutbeck. Team members located and guided the man back to the valley. The man suffered no injury other than being cold and wet.
27 Search	21/05/06 22.55 and 22/05/06	Fairfield Area	Called to assist Langdale Ambleside MRT for search for solo male walker from Sunderland who was reported to be walking the Fairfield Horse Shoe walk. All Night search revealed no trace. The search was continued the following day with assistance from Penrith MRT, Kirby Stephen MRT, RAF Leeming MRT, Search and Rescue dogs, and a Helicopter from RAF Valley. No trace found. Other Teams were conducting searches in other areas.
28 Rescue	22/05/06 15.20	Raven Crag Pasture Beck	Rescue of 29yr old female soldier from Rippon who had slipped and fractured her lower leg whilst on military training exercise. Treated on the fell and stretchered to Hartsop. Transfered to Hospital by County Ambulance. Penrith MRT also assisted with evacuation.
29 Search	27/05/06 09.30	Deepdale	Further search for missing walker (incident no 27) of Crags in Deepdale and Dove Crag. SARDA (Lakes), SARDA (England)and Patterdale MRT members. Nothing found
30 Rescue	29/05/06 17.14	Red Screes	A male fell from crags half a mile above the Kirkstone Inn. He suffered a fracture dislocation of his ankle. The team treated his injuries. Air lifted to Cumberland Infirmary.
31 Search	31/05/06 18.00	Dove Crag	Team members abseiled into a gulley on Dove Crag to make a search for a bivi bag reported high on the crag. Bag retrieved no sign of a person.
32 Rescue	01/06/06 14.00	Long Crag Lake Path	A female fell and fractured her ankle. Boat evacuation. Outward Bound boat used for evac.
33 Rescue	05/06/06 13.20	Striding Edge	A 67 yr. old male on a led walk slipped from Striding Edge 300ft towards Red Tarn. Multiple Injuries, Airlifted to Newcastle General Hospital. 2 Air ambulances were deployed and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer. The initial report was also of a second casualty Team members were flown to Striding Edge and no second casualty found.
34 Rescue	07/06/06 17.35	St Sunday Crag	Report from a scrambler on the rocks that he had spotted a body hidden in a gulley. The body was recovered. Thought to be the missing person from incident 27.
35 Rescue	09/06/06 14.09	Aira Force	A 74 yr old male from Derbyshire suffered a medical collapse on the Aira Force path. He was treated at the scene and stretchered to a waiting ambulance for onward transport to Penrith New Hospital.
36 Search	11/06/06 22.30	Patterdale	Solo Male from USA doing Cost to Coast. Failed to arrive at B&B in Patterdale. As team were assembling and search plan was being developed with Penrith Team the man arrived having been delayed. 6 hrs overdue but safe and well.
37 Rescue FATAL	24/06/06 13.40	Helvellyn North Face	A 57 yr. old male stood up after his lunch break on summit of Helvellyn and toppled over the edge. Witnessed by two members of Duddon and Furness MRT who descended two rope length to find only a watch. Body located with Patterdale search dog 250ft below on the headwall. Body recovered . Assisted by Penrith MRT and Helicopter from RAF Boulmer
38 Search	25/06/06 19.50	Swirral Edge Helvellyn	A part of 2 were reported overdue form a fell walk to Helvellyn. Located safely
39 Rescue	08/07/06 15.45	Ridge between Helvellyn and Nethermost Pike	A 51 yr. old female from Kendal slipped and suffered facial injuries and a fractured upper arm. The woman was stretchered down to Dunmail Raise for onward transport to Lancaster Infirmary. We were assisted by the Keswick MRT.
40 Rescue	26/07/06 18.15	Silver Bay Ullswater	13 yr. old Girl Scout who had dived into the water and hit her head. She was transported by boat to Glenridding and then on with their leaders to Penrith New Hospital.
41 Rescue	29/07/06 18.51	Hayeswater Beck Hartsop	A 39yr old male suffering from vertigo. Escorted from the fell and taken to Patterdale
42 Rescue	29/07/06 18.55	Pasture Beck Hartsop	A 14yr old girl on an Outward Bound course fell and hurt her back. Stretchered from the hill and transfered to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.
43 Rescue	09/08/06 13.25	Place Fell	52 yr. old male slipped while taking part on a orienteering event. Injured lower leg queried fracture. Assisted by Penrith MRT
44 Rescue	09/08/06	Place Fell	12 yr. old boy with twisted right ankle. At same orienteering eveny
45 Rescue	09/08/06	Place Fell	A 60 yr old man fallen with badly bruised leg, Checked out by Team doctor. Same orienteering event.
46 Rescue	15/08/06 13.45	Aira Force	Female fallen on rocks at top bridge. Cracked ribs diagnosed. Taken to hospital by Land Ambulance. Air Ambulance also attended
47 Rescue	16/08/06 rescue	Striding Edge Helvellyn	12 yr. old boy from Crawley slipped 70 ft into Nethermost Cove. The boy and his mother were winched aboard and air lifted by RAF helicopter to Hospital.. Air Ambulance also attended.
48 Rescue	19/08/06 13.20	Helvellyn	A male slipped in poor visibility and sustained a dislocated shoulder. His injury was reduced on the fell. He was lowered down to Red Tan by ropes and transfered to Air Ambulance to hospital.
49 Rescue	22/08/06 15.25	Bleaberry Knott	Female (69yrs) slipped and landed badly on her hip. Flown by Air Ambulance to Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle.
50 Rescue	25/08/06 15.35	Grisedale	A 48yr old female from Northampton slipped and suffered a dislocation fracture of her ankle. The dislocation was reduced and splinted. She was carried to the valley bottom to a waiting team ambulance.
51 Search	28/08/06 00/12	Preist Hole Dove Crag	Search for a man who had become separate from his companion. Their intention was to bivi at Priests Hole. He was located at 04 am in a bivibag above the intended bivi spot.
52 Rescue	31/08/06 13.55	Grisedale	A 49 yr. old female suffered a fit. Met by Team and air lifted to hospital
53 Rescue	01/09/06 01.10	Boardale Hause	An female Outward Bound student had a bad asthma attack whilst high camping. Stretchered from the fell and transferred to Centre staff,
54 Rescue	08/09/06 14.15	Knotts Mill Caravan Park	Ambulance assist to female who had fallen down an embankment.
55 Search	14/09/06 16.00	Aira Force	A hasty search for a mentally handicapped male who had been missing from his parents for 2 hours. Located in a distressed and wet state and re united with his parents.
56 Rescue	17/09/06 18.30	The Knott Hartsop	A male (60yr old) from Missouri USA suffered a knee injury. He was stretchered from the fell.
57 Search 3 FATAL	23/09/06 16.27	Ullswater	The team reacted to a radio call that persons were in difficulty in the water. On arrival 3 persons were missing. A search was conducted along the shore line and the team boat was launched. A search was conducted on the water. Two bodies were located by two sports divers and marked. A third body was located by police divers who recovered all 3 bodies. A Team search dog was used in the initial search. A multi agency effort by Police Ambulance Coast Guard and Mountain Rescue.
58 Rescue	27/09/06 14.15	Hole in Wall Helvellyn	61 yr. old male from Preston had fallen and dislocated his shoulder which was reduced at the scene. The air ambulance which was assisting was unable to fly due to deteriorating conditions having landed on. The crew spent the night in the aircraft which was able to take off in the morning when the weather improved. Penrith MRT assisted and the man was stretchered off the hill to Greenside.
59 Rescue	21/10/06 16.40	Grisedale	A female from Bristol damaged her ankle on path from Pinicle Ridge St. Sunday Crag. She was met by the team and the ankle was treated at the Rescue Centre.
60 Rescue	25/10/06 12.30	Sybarrow Crag	Called by police to locate girl with learning difficulties was missing from her party. Located at Glenridding
61 Rescue	25/10/06 14.36	Kepple Cove	13 yr. old boy from Warminster fractured his ankle. He was stretchered to a waiting landrover Ambulance for onward transport to Hospital.
62 Rescue	01/11/06 12.00	Mires Beck Glenridding	Male who had slipped whilst descending damaged his knee. He was assisted from the fell by team members.
63 Rescue	02/11/06 12.00	Nethermost Cove	A male from Northern Ireland slipped from Striding Edge and fell 200ft into Nethermost Cove. He was winched by an RAF helicopter and flown to Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle.
64 Rescue	18/11/06 11.20	Aira Force	a 52yr old woman fractured and dislocated her ankle which was reduced at the scene. She was evacuated on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.
65 Rescue	20/11/06 17.02	Striding Edge Helvellyn	A male (21yr old) who was walking with a university group on Striding Edge was blown off the ridge by gale force winds (as per weather forecast ) and suffered head injuries. He was brought own to the Rescue Centre and monitored by a team doctor.
66 Rescue	27/11/06 16.38	Helvellyn environs	Reporting person was concerned for a couple who he had seen in deteriorating weather on Hellvelyn On his return to Wythburn car park he called the police to express his concern for their safety. Team requested a search by Police and informed Keswick MRT. As search was starting report came in that the car was no longer in the car park so search stood down.
67 Rescue	17/12/06 12.30	Grisedale Near to Ruthwaite Lodge	A 59 yr. old male from Lancashire was suffering chest pains. The team called the assistance of Air Ambulance and he was air lifted to hospital.
68 Search	25/12/06 16.05	Place Fell	Two persons from London phoned police to say they were lost in mist on Place Fell. Located by team and escorted from the Hill safe and well.... Most of the team had eaten their Christmas dinner!
69 Rescue	28/12/06 13.06	Great Mell Fell	Called to assist a 26yr old female who had fallen from her quad bike. Treated by the team for back and pelvis injuries using a vacuum mattress and flown to Cumberland Infirmary.
70 Rescue	31/12/06 14.00	Deepdale	3 fell runners running from Ambleside to Patterdale. One of the group had become hypothermic and had periods of unconsciousness. Transfered to Cumberland infirmary by land ambulance.
