Patterdale Mountain Rescue incidents for 2003

01 Search	01/01/05 12.00	Beda Fell	A male and female walker reported via 999 that they were lost in mist on a walk which the female had walked before. They carried no map compass torch or whistle. During the search the mist lifted and they were able to safely descend.
02 Public Assistance	08.01.05 15.00	Carlisle	During the major flooding of Carlisle the team's 17ft rigid inflatable boat was transported to the flood area with a crew of 3.The boat made many trips in the Warwick Road area of the City to rescue stranded house holders and pets, often wading in chest height water to do checks on the safety of residents. Food was also distributed. A doctor from the Penrith Team was aboard the boat for medical response. Another of the team's Land rover Ambulances also ferried diesel from the Dalston depot for the fire service.
03 Search	08.01.05 17.55	Angle Tarn	2 male walker/runners reported overdue Angle Tarn Pike area. The location was later found to be Angle Tarn Langdale and not Patterdale. They had become delayed as they were assisting another fell walker with a fractured ankle.
04 Rescue	05.03.05 14.55	Link Hause Dove Crag	A 57 yr old female from Ramsbottom Lancashire, was blown off her feet at Link Hause. She sustained a fractured ankle. A helicopter from RN Gannet tried twice to get to the scene but was forced back due to the severe blizzard conditions. The Patterdale and Langdale Ambleside Teams reached the casualty, who was with her husband, and stretchered her down to Patterdale.The rescue took 8 hours.
05 Rescue	13.03.05 14.05	Rough Edge Caudal Moor	A 53 yr old man fractured his ankle after slipping on ice while walking with his wife above Hartsop.Trea ted and stretchered to the valley
06 Ambulance assistance	19.03.05 12.50	Patterdale	A 90 yr old male required transport by Land rover Ambulance to the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Centre for transfer to County Ambulance. The County Ambulance was unable to reach the house.
07 Rescue	20.03.05 14.10	Seldom Seen	A female (58) slipped while taking photographs. Spiral Fracture of Tibia. Splinted and carried to waiting Landrover Ambulance for transfer to Mountain Rescue Centre and on to Cumberland Infirmary.
08 Search	22.03.05 21.45	Helvellyn Plateau	2 twenty year olds lost in mist. Located and guided from the hill. The Keswick Team also assisted and searched the Thirlmere side of Helvellyn.
09 Search	25.03.05 17.20	Helvellyn	Woman became separated from her companion on Helvellyn and descended. Became concerned for her friend's safety and alerted the Ullswater steamer Company who transported her to the Mountain rescue Centre. As search was starting the lady turned up at the car safe and well.
10 First Aid	26.03.05 13.25	Aira Force	5yr old little girl damaged her hand in a fall on the path. Team were in the area and administered First Aid.
11 First Aid	26.03.05 16.00	Glenridding	A male walker had finished his walk on Helvellyn and had fractured his ankle on the way off. First Aid given.
12 Search	26.03.05 16.10	Kepple Cove	A man became disorientated and was not happy about map reading. He called for assistance. Located and brought off the hill.
13 Search	26.03.05 16.10	Fairfield	Friend became concerned for overdue family party (2 adults and 6 and 9 yr olds) who were ascending Fairfield. In early part of the search the family were located. The Langdale Ambleside Team and Search and Rescue Dogs were involved. An RAF helicopter was on standby.
14 Search	26.03.05 16.50	Kepple Cove Area	A party of 2 became disorientated and descended into the wrong valley. They were met and brought down to Glenridding.
0415 Search	26.03.05 18.30	Helvellyn	Two inexperienced walkers became lost in the mist below Helvellyn. Located and guided off.
16 Rescue	30.03.05 14.00	High Street	A female walker, part of a guided walk party slipped sustaining a fractured ankle. She was stretchered from the fell via High Street Summit to Hartsop. Transferred to the Mountain rescue Centre for onward transport to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
17 Search	07.04.05 15.12	Hartsop Above How	12 year old female reported missing on a fell walk. Turned up safe and well at Camp site.
18 Search	11.04.05 20.05	Red Screes	A 55 yr old man was reported overdue from a fell walk. FATAL. Body located at foot of craggy ground, Red Screes Kirkstone. Assisted Langdale Mountain Rescue Team
19 Rescue	17.04.05 14.00	Grisedale Ruthwaite Lodge	Female from Salford with knee injury, Treated on the fell and stretchered to valley. Penrith MRT also assisted.
20 Animal Rescue	26.04.05 15.28	Sandwick	Assisted a family whose dog had died on Hallin Fell. Carried to Sandwick Bay and evacuated to their car at Howtown,
21 Rescue	27.04.05 12.30	Helvellyn Striding Edge	A 26 yr old male was suffering from shortage of breath and chest pains. Assisted by Air ambulance flown to Cumbria Infirmary, Carlisle for treatment.
22 Rescue	03.05.05 21.32	Fisher Place Gyll	Two 18yr old males from Gateshead became separated from the rest of their party. Got onto steep ground and were unhappy to move. They had no idea where they were. Communicated by text as mobile battery was low. Keswick and Patterdale Teams searched all night and they were found at dawn by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer.
23 Search	06.05.05 18.50	Helvellyn Area	Team called out for two well equipped and experienced walkers Thought to be overdue by the caller. Found to be safe and well - a misunderstanding on their proposed time of return.
24 Rescue	19.05.05 11.00	Bordale Hause Patterdale	A 13 yr old girl with a school party slipped and damaged her ankle. Stretchered from fell.
25 Rescue	21.05.05 15.03	Barton Fell	Horse riding accident. 40 yr old female fell from horse as it was grazing. Treated for spinal injuries as a precaution. Discharged from hospital same evening.
26 Rescue	22.05.05 19.40	Ullswater	Call from Coastguard to launch the team rescue boat for 2 persons clinging to upturned boat. On arrival they had managed to get to shore. Checked over by Team doctor.
27 Rescue FATAL	29.05.05 20.06	Striding Edge Helvellyn	A man in his 40's collapsed on Striding Edge. His 10 yr old son called for help from other walkers on the far side of Red Tarn who performed CPR for a considerable time. Body and child airlifted to Patterdale Mountain Rescue Centre.
28 Rescue	04.06.05 15.58	Hart Crag	A 65 yr old female fell and damaged her spine and ribs. She was treated on the fell and stretchered down to Deepdale for further treatment at Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.
29 Rescue	19.06.05 12.33	Aira Force	A 76 yr old man had slipped from the path into the gorge above the beck. He was unable to move and his son and a passer by held him in a precarious position until the team arrived. He was roped out and suffered only minor injuries.
30 Rescue	20.06.05 16.00	Low Wood Deepdale	A 56 yr old female had slipped on the descent path and fractured her ankle. She was treated by paramedics and stretchered down to the road ambulance.
31 First Aid Treatment	26.06.05 15.00	Patterdale	A fell runner damaged his right arm and was treated by the Team Doctor.
32 Rescue	27.06.05 14.55	Hallin Fell Howtown	A female student on an outdoor course suffered heat exhaustion. Treated on the fell by the Team and stretchered down to the Hause.
33 Rescue	10.07.05 16.50	Grisedale	A 56 year old woman slipped on the descent path from Grisedale Tarn and fractured her Tibia and Fibular. Due to the severity of the injury she was air lifted by a helicopter from RAF Leconfield to West Cumbria Hospital. The Penrith Team also assisted in the rescue.
34 Rescue	14.07.05 13.45	Hart Crag	A 16 yr old male from North Lincolnshire strained a muscle while walking with a group of youths on an outdoor course. he was treated at the scene and stretchered from the fell into Deepdale. The Penrith Mountain Rescue Team also assisted with the evacuation.
35 Rescue	23..07.05 15.35	Scalehow Beck	A woman of 80yrs tripped over a tree stump and suffered abrasions to her head and face and cuts to her arm. She was treated and checked over by paramedics. The Penrith Team were also called but stood down.
36 Animal Rescue	24.07.05 14.58	Striding Edge	A dog had fallen from the Edge about 100 metres. The owner had descended over steep ground and was with the dog on arrival of the team. The man was roped down to Red Tarn and the dog was carried off the fell to the Greenside road. After a night in the vet hospital and surgery to its jaw and teeth the dog recovered.
37 Search	29.07.15 14.10	Hallin Fell	A female became separated from her family ona walk. The Husband called 999 because he considered her to be overdue. Located by the roadside safe and well.
38 Search	1.08.0 1.05	Ullswater Howtown to Patterdale path	Two persons became disorientaed after a fell walk. They called for help by phone saying that they were close to the Lake but due to the batteries going flat they were unable to safely move in the dark. Located on the Lakeshore path and returned to Patterdale with the Team boat that was searching the shore of Ullswater.
39 Search	1.08.05 17.45	Howtown	Search for 2 people from Bristol who had became separated from a large group. Last seen at Side Farm Patterdale. Located safe and well at Howtown.
40 Animal Rescue	04.08.05 09.00	Martindale Common Ewe Crag	A cragfast sheep was taken off the appropriate named Ewe Crag where it had become stuck.
41 Rescue	09.08.05 17.00	Helvellyn Headwall	A report was received that a 17yr odl female was stuck on the headwall of Helvellyn. On arrival the woman had been helped to safe ground by passing walkers.
42 Rescue	09.08.05 18.00	Helvellyn Area	Whilst the team was on the previous job a report was received that a family from Cornwall were overdue from a fell walk. After an initial search by the team the family were located safe and well.
43 Search	23.08.05 16.30	Sheffield Pike	Party of 3 from Llanelli who became lost in mist. The Team and 5 search dogs worked Sheffield Pike, Whiteside Bank, Stbarrow Dodd and Great Dodd, where they were located and brought off the fell.
44 Search	23.08.05 16.30	Threshwaite Mouth	While the above job was in progress, Kendal Team requested assistance in searching the Patterdale side of High Street. A family of 2 adults and a child of 10 were located with a search dog in thick mist. They were walked to safety.
45 Rescue	25.08.15 17.10	Place Fell	Shouts for help were reported high on the fellside above Side Farm Camp site. 2 persons located who were being helped by other fell walkers. Team ascorted them down to the valley bottom.
46 Rescue	31.08.05 18.30	High Force, Gowbarrow	A 17 yr old girl on a Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition slipped on the path above high force and was treated for back injuries. She was placed in a full body vacuum splint and stretchered to Dockray. County Ambulance to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlilse.
47 Rescue	04.09.05 14.45	Ullswater Lakeshore Path	A 14 yr old boy fell over the handle bars of his mountain bike. The lad had back pain. A lake user put the boy on his motor boat and took him to the other side of the Lake. A serach ensued as the boat user had not informed any one of his actions. The landing point the boy had been taken to was located and the team imobilised with a full body vacuum splint. Transfered to County ambulance for hospital.
48 Rescue	10.09.05 12.32	Red Screes	A 5 yr old boy fallen with reported spinal injury and head injury . Air lifted to Hospital.
49 Search	23.09.05 17.23	Pinnacle Ridge St. Sunday Crag	Party split on Pinnacle Ridge. A concerned member of the group reported the fact to police. Man was located by the team at Patterdale and the party were reunited.
50 Rescue FATAL	24.09.05 12.30	Aira Force	An 89 yr old female suffered a heart attack below Aira Force. The team who were on execise attended. Despite CPR efforts by the team, its advanced first aiders and paramedics both on the ground and whilst flying to Carlisle Hospital the lady died.
51 Search	10.10.05 18.00	Angle Tarn	Two male walkers from Nottingham became separated whilst on a circular fell walk. A search was started and early on the man was located making his way off the hill.
52 Rescue	25.10.05 13.50	Dale Head Bannerdale	A 27 yr old male suffered a fractured ankle. He was splinted and taken to pooley Bridge for transfer to County Ambulance and The cumberland Infirmary, Carlilse.
53 Search	28.10.05 18.56	Seldom Seen Ullswater	A passing driver on the Lake road reported flashing lights on the fellside between Aira force and Patterdale. Investigation found a intruder alarm light flashing on a remote house.
54 Rescue	29.10.05 16.05	Hayeswater Gill Hartsop	A competitor on the Karimor International Mountain Marathon collapsed with chest pains. Treated by the team and flown by RAF helicopter to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.
55 Rescue	1.11.05 13.50	Striding Edge Helvellyn	Male from Surrey slipped and dislocated his shoulder, Team treated the man and he was flown by Royal Navy Helicopter from RN Gannet to Cumberland Infirmary. Carlilse.
56 Search	06.11.05 11.55	Helvellyn	A 55yr old male, despndant and suicidal heading for Helvellyn to end his life. Team stood down by police when they were happy that he was no longer a danger to himself.
57 Rescue	17.11.05 15.41	Kepple Cove	A female from Calder Bridge slipped and damaged her face on a rock. The rest of her party walked her down to Glenridding. Air Ambulance attended and the paramedic advised her companions to drive her to Whitehaven Hospital.
58 Rescue	30.12.05 15.00	Grisedale	35yr old male from Wigan slipped and damaged knee- bad laceration. Stretchered off from below Hole in Wall Helvellyn. Penrith MRT assited with the evacuation.
