Patterdale Mountain Rescue incidents for 2003

01 Rescue	01/01/04 12.15	St Sunday Crag	65 year old man from Rochdale slipped on snow and fell about 30ft whilst descending from St Sunday Crag Head and Chest injuries and mild hypothermia and a fractured femur. The man had been overtaken by bad weather He spent the night sheltering on the High Fell and on his descent tumbled over the crag.
02 Search	02.01.04 17.45	St Sunday Crag	A group of nine became lost on St Sunday Crag. They had no torches and were lightly equipped. They were located and escorted to the valley bottom.
03 Search	03.01.04 21.00	Fairfield	A group of walkers became lost on Fairfield. After wandering around trying to find their way they called for Mountain Rescue assistance. A helicopter from RAF Boulmer managed to locate and lift the group back to Patterdale.
04 Rescue	04.01.04 15.45	Dovedale	A 59 year old male became ill with a medical condition. He was treated on the fell and evacuated with one of the Team Doctors to Hospital.
05 Search	08.01.04 16.00	Sandwick Ullswater	Flashing lights reported on the fell above Sandwick. Investigated - nothing found.
06 Search	13.01.04 14.30	Bordale Hause Patterdale	2 Persons and a dog became lost on the fell in mist. They were located by the team and brought down to Patterdale.
07 Rescue	07.02.03 20.18	Dovedale	A group of scouts had got into difficulties below dove Crag due to bad weather. They were intending to spend the night in Preist's Hole, a cave on the side of Dove Crag. They were located and airlifted to Patterdale.
08 Rescue	17.02.04 12.10	Hartsop above How	A 77 year old man from Grasmere became ill whilst walking with a friend. He was located and airlifted to the Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.
09 Rescue	2002.04 16.45	Dovedale	A 41 year old female from Peterlee slipped on rocky path and fractured her kneecap. She was stretchered down to Sykeside for onward transport to Hospital
10 Rescue	28/02/04 18.25	Greenside	A 21 year old male from Leicestershire slipped on icy ground and sustained a fractured leg, He was treated on the fell and carried on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance at Greenside Mines.
11 Rescue FATAL	05/03/04 18.07	Face of Helvellyn	A 44 year old man from Bolton lost the path on the top of Striding edge became separated from his brother and strayed onto the head wall of Helvellyn. FATAL the mans body was recovered by team members and a Helicopter from RAF Boulmer
12 Rescue	06/03/04 17.43	Helvellyn	3 Females reported missing. Group had started to climb Striding Edge leaving the 3 females to descend and wait at Red Tarn. Intention was to circuit onto Swirral Edge and meet up again at Red Tarn. The group were advised not to descend Swirral Edge by a Ranger so descended via the Kepple Cove Zig Zags to Glenridding. The 3 waiting members of the party stayed until an hours daylight left and returned to Glenridding where they were reunited with the rest of the party.
13 Search	10/03/04 18.15	High Street	3 Persons disorientated on High Street in mist, snow and sleet. Navigational error on tops. Located at Garburn Road.
14 Animal Rescue	16/03/04 13.00	Ewe Crag Martindale	Request by farmer to evacuate cragfast sheep that had been on the crag for several days. Sheep found to be dead.
15 Rescue	16/03/04 13.44	Red Tarn Helvellyn	51 yr old male sustained a fractured Tibia. Stretchered to Greenside road head.
16 Rescue	08/04/04 17.05	Aira Force Ullswater	A male (41yrs) fell from the edge of the ravine above Aira Force. He remained in the beck until the team were able to rope him out.
17 Rescue	10/04/04 14.22	Whiteside Bank	A female had damaged her knee and was unable to walk. Aircraft in the area assisted the team and the woman was flown to hospital.
18 Rescue FATAL	10/04/04 20.20	Barton Fell Above Howtown	Recovery of body of 41 yr old male who had collapsed suddenly whilst walking with his family.
19 Rescue	11/04/04 13.56	Brotherswater	ATC Cadet slipped from path and lodged between rock and tree. Evacuated and treated for back injuries.
20 Rescue	12/04/04 14.00	Aira Force Ullswater	84yr old female collapsed close to the force. Treated and stretchered to car park and waiting ambulance.
21 Rescue	21//04/04 14.30	Houndshope Cove Dovedale	A 30 yr old male fell on steep broken ground adjacent to Dove Crag.The man was flown to hospital with spinal and shoulder blade fractures.
22 Search	01//05/04 15.35	Helvellyn	Report of person falling from Helvellyn, Found to be rucsac dropped from top.
23 Rescue	03/05/04 19.00	Grisedale	Two male walkers one said to be stuck on path with ankle injury unable to proceed. Team met up with the pair and found little wrong with them. Escorted to valley bottom.
24 Rescue	16/05/04 10.30	Bordale Hause	Girl on D of E expedition collapsed. Air lifted to hospital
25 Rescue FATAL	17/05/04 13.06	Howtown to Patterdale	Man collapsed on lake shore path and died. Body transported by boat and landrover ambulance to Patterdale
26 Search	27/05/04 23.00	Helvellyn	Inexperienced walker overdue. probable intended route Helvellyn. 32 rescuers, 6 search dogs and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer searched the Helvellyn area. Man located on road side in morning safe and well having slept on the fell. Teams from Patterdale, Keswick and Penrith and SARDA assisted.
27 Animal Rescue	31/05/04 13.55	Birkhouse Moor	Request from police to see if we could assist a Bernise Mountain Dog who was suffering from heat exhaustion. Water and oxygen taken up and after taking shelter and drinking water the dog managed to walk down
28 Rescue	31/05/04 15.30	Helvellyn Swirral Edge	80 yr old male slipped on path and ruptured his leg muscle and was unable to walk. He was stretchered to Greenside road head and on to hospital.
29 Search	06/06/04 20.20	High Street Area	A lone male mountain biker became disorientated in the mist on the high fell. Located at Thornthwaite Beacon and escorted to valley. No injury.
30 Search	20/06/04 22.45	Helvellyn Area	Assistance to the Keswick Team to locate a man (46 yrs) who had left Keswick in a depressed state. After his car was located near Thirlmere, a search was mounted . He was found by the Keswick Team on the summit of Helvellyn in the early hours, waiting for his last sunrise.
31 Rescue	22/07/04 16.30	Kailpot Crag	Report of female with broken leg. Howtown boat collected the casualty.
32 Search FATAL	22/07/04 17.00	Ullswater Pooley Bridge	Team were called to help search for a male who was reported to be in difficulty in the lake. Body recovered.
33 Rescue	24/07/04 13.50	Hartsop above How	A 68yr old female from Lincolnshire slipped from the path and fractured her ankle. She was treated at the scene and stretchered to the valley for onward transport to hospital.
34 Search	25/07/04 14.50	Bonscale Tower Howtown	Two females from Hertfordshire lost their way and became cragfast on steep broken ground. Located and guided off the hill.
35 Rescue	14/08/04 15.00	Dowthwaite Head	A 12yr old boy slipped from his mountain bike and received groin injury and abrasions. Taken to Penrith Hospital.
36 Rescue	15/08/04 15.00	Angle Tarn	A woman (46yrs) slipped and fractured her ankle. Brought from fell and transferred to Cumberland Infirmary.
37 Search	2517/08/04 22.20	Horrocks wood	A male lost in woodland. As search was beginning he found his own way out.
38 Search	19/08/04 16.40	Clough Head	A party of 2 walkers became disorientated in mist and heavy showers. Located and led off the fells by the team.
39 Rescue	22/08/04 15.13	Sheffield Pike	Female visitor from America fractured ankle when path gave way. Treated and airlifted from the fell to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
40 Search	25/08/04 21.30	Tirril River Eamont	Search for two missing youths aged 11 and 13 who had taken their inflatable boat from Ullswater on to the river Eamont and had been taken by the current down the river to Tirril. Search on lake by Patterdale MRT, Outward Bound OAC, Howtown OAC. Penrith MRT searched the river banks. The lads were located on the road, walking back to their campsite and carrying their boat.
41 Search	29/08/04 18.25	Boardale Hause track	Father and child reported missing by their mother who had turned back from a mountain walk. Located with father carrying child. Wet and cold but otherwise unhurt.
42 Rescue FATAL	04/09/04 14.10	Striding Edge Helvellyn	A 59yr old male walker fell 100m from Striding Edge and suffered fatal injuries. He was walking with a party of 11 walkers.
43 Animal Rescue	05/09/04 12.54	Striding Edge Helvellyn	A dog fell from the same location as the previous days rescue. The owners thought the dog had broken his leg but was found by the team to have recovered enough to walk off. No broken bones were suspected.

44 Search	17/09/04	Angle Tarn 09.00	Request from police to investigate a collapsed tent with a lot of equipment close to Angle Tarn. The team searched the area and found no people. The tent and equipment was brought from the fell.
45 Rescue	17/09/04 22.50	Dove Crag	A male walker twisted his ankle and was unable to walk. He was located and stretchered down to Scandale. The Langdale Ambleside Team were jointly involved with this rescue.
46 Animal Rescue	19/09/04	Dove Crag	Report of a fox hound stuck in a gully. Team turned out but the hound was released by a passing fell runner.
47 Rescue	05/10/04 14.20	St Sunday Crag	A 61 yr old female fell on the ascent of St Sunday Crag injuring her knee. Team met her and assisted down.
48 Rescue	12/10/04 20.30	Greenside Mines	A 42 yr old male walked over a retaining wall in the dark and fractured both his legs. He was winched from the gorge. and taken to Cumberland Infirmary.
49 Rescue	17/10/04 14.00	Shooting Box Gowbarrow Fell	A 52 yr old female suffered a fractured ankle. She was treated on the fell and airlifted by RAF to Cumberland Infirmary.
50 Rescue	22/10/04 14.10	Stony Cove Pike	31yr old male slipped on the fell and tumbled causing head injury. Air lifted to hospital.
51 Animal Rescue	31/10/04 15.40	Greenhow End	Report of dog hurt in Gully. Team investigated and dog found to be uninjured. Returned to local farmer.
52 Search	18/11/04 15.16	Hounds hope Cove, Dove Crag	A male lost in bad weather with no torch, map or compass. Patterdale and Langdale Ambleside teams joined in a search for the man. He was located cold and wet and was able to walk of the fell.
53 Search	21/11/04 18.15	Helvellyn Summit	Group of five walkers lost in mist in bad weather conditions on plateau. Located and guided off. One of the party was ill equipped, wearing trainers. He was a trainee leader on an outdoor education Course!
54 Search	30/11/04 15.00	Helvellyn Summit	A male called from his mobile to say he was lost in mist near the summit of helvellyn. Guided off by mobile phone.
55 Search	02/12/04 17.40	Silver Point	A male and female became lost on lake shore path in thick mist. They called 999 for help. Located and escorted to Patterdale.
56 Search	03/01/04 14.22	Helvellyn	A man and wife reported that they were cold wet with no dry clothing near to the summit of Helvellyn and required Mountain Rescue. Passing more experienced walkers showed them the way off as the team were making their way to the scene.
